Control Board

Desktop monitoring for home labs: Proxmox hosts and guests, Kubernetes, service checks, certificates and alerts in a single window. For Windows and Linux.

In private testing

Control Board is in private alpha with a small group of testers. A public alpha, with downloads here, will follow. Current tester builds: Windows 0.11.57, Linux 0.1.2.

What it does

  • Shows your home lab in one window: Proxmox hosts and guests, a network map, Kubernetes, web and service checks, and certificates.
  • Raises an alert only once a problem persists, with an alert history and maintenance windows.
  • On Windows, also monitors disk health and temperatures, Proxmox backups, Docker containers and UPS status, and can send alerts to your phone through ntfy, Pushover, Gotify, email or a webhook.
  • Runs host checks: read-only commands you define, run on every host.
  • Turns your own scripts and commands into buttons, each labeled with its risk level.
  • Scales from a single server to multiple sites with hundreds of guests.

Windows and Linux

Control Board runs on Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit) and on Linux desktops such as Ubuntu 24.04. Each version is released separately, with its own version number, download and release notes, so a fix for one never waits on the other.

Read-only by default

Out of the box, Control Board only reads. It reports what is happening in your lab and does not change your systems on its own.

  • Read-only access is enough. A Proxmox API token with the PVEAuditor role can read everything and change nothing, and a Kubernetes login can be limited to reading (Control Board reads pod logs, never Secrets). Connecting Proxmox over SSH is quicker, but that login is usually root. The app only reads over it unless you turn on guest power; a read-only API token guarantees that reading is all it can do.
  • Your own actions are buttons for scripts and commands you add. They run on your computer with your own tools and credentials. Every action that makes a change asks for confirmation, high-risk actions require a typed confirmation word, and your services are checked before and after.
  • Controls stay off until you turn them on in Settings > Controls. Guest power (start, shut down, reboot and force stop a Proxmox guest) is available on Windows from 0.11.57 and on Linux from 0.1.2. Windows also offers restarting and scaling Kubernetes workloads, a terminal on a host, guided host maintenance and a UPS shutdown order. Guest power and Kubernetes changes require a login with permission to make them, and the app offers them only where that login has it. Every change is recorded in a log.
  • The lab agent (Windows, preview) only reads until you authorize a copy of the app to make changes through it, using the agent’s own PIN.

Privacy and connections

Control Board runs on your computer and connects directly to the following, and to nothing else:

  • your Proxmox, Kubernetes, hosts and web checks, with the access you grant
  • Cloudflare’s API, only if you add a Cloudflare token
  • the alert services you configure, such as ntfy, Pushover, Gotify, your mail server or a webhook
  • your own lab agent, if you install one
  • GitHub, to check for updates

There is no account, no telemetry and no intermediary server. Your settings, history and secrets stay on your computer. If you install the lab agent, your alert destinations and their tokens are also stored on the agent’s machine in your lab, so it can send alerts while your PC is off.
