Control Board
Desktop monitoring for home labs: Proxmox hosts and guests, Kubernetes, service checks, certificates and alerts in a single window. For Windows and Linux.
Get started on Linux
Requirements
- A 64-bit Linux desktop with a keyring (GNOME Keyring or KWallet). Tested on Ubuntu 24.04.
- A Proxmox VE host or cluster that your computer can reach
- Optional: a Kubernetes cluster, and websites or services to monitor
Install
Download the latest .deb or AppImage from the releases page you were given.
- .deb (Ubuntu, Debian and similar): in the folder you downloaded it to,
run
sudo apt install ./followed by the file name. - AppImage (most other distributions): make the file executable
(right-click > Properties > Allow executing as a program), then open
it. On Ubuntu 24.04, AppImages first require
sudo apt install libfuse2t64.
Set it up
Open Control Board and choose Add a source.
- Proxmox: enter the address of any host in the cluster, then choose how
to log in. SSH key is the quickest option, using a key you already have
(
~/.ssh); Control Board only reads over it unless you turn on guest power in Settings > Controls. API token (read-only) uses a token with the PVEAuditor role; the form shows the three commands that create one. - Kubernetes: browse to your kubeconfig (usually
~/.kube/config) or paste it. A login limited to get, list and watch is sufficient. - Websites and services: add an address to check and, optionally, text the page must contain.
Secrets you paste are stored in your system keyring. Key files you point to are read in place and never copied. If no keyring is running on your desktop, the app tells you. Your own actions run in bash on your computer.
The settings file is ~/.config/com.parakalix.controlboard/board.yaml, and
history is stored in ~/.local/share/com.parakalix.controlboard.
Good to know
- Control Board runs in the system tray. Its tray menu offers Open, Refresh now, Start at login (on by default) and Quit. Closing the window keeps the app running in the tray.
- Guest power (start, shut down, reboot, force stop) is off until you turn it on in Settings > Controls.
- With the .deb, new versions are offered in the title bar. They are signed and install in place.
Uninstall
- .deb:
sudo apt remove control-board - AppImage: delete the file.
- In either case, delete the two folders above to remove all settings and history.
Reporting a bug
Email support@parakalix.net, or open an issue on the releases page you were given. Describe what you did, what you expected and what happened; a screenshot helps. Leave out passwords, tokens, addresses and any other private details, especially in issues, which are public.
