Stop holds the line, waypoints keep the formation

EaW U ·

The Stop button now behaves like the original’s. In Forces of Corruption, pressing Stop doesn’t just halt your ships: each one settles into a small formation of its own, right where it stands, and holds there. EaW U now does the same for capital ships and frigates. As in the original, Stop also switches off Hunt and the other toggled attack abilities on the ships you stopped. Fighters and hero fighters still use the old stop for now: the original game handles them in a way that is still being worked out, and they are left unchanged until that behavior is confirmed.

Waypoints no longer break up a formation. Shift-clicking waypoints for ships that are moving together used to pull each ship out of its formation. Now the waypoints queue on the formation itself, as in the original:

  • up to six queued legs, flown in the order you clicked them;
  • clicking the same point twice doesn’t add a second leg;
  • a waypoint placed back near an earlier one turns the route into a loop that the fleet keeps patrolling.

Ships that aren’t already moving in a formation still queue waypoints the old way for now.

The stealth icon is right everywhere. The TIE Phantom and the Vengeance frigate use their own stealth icon for their cloaking ability, rather than the generic cloak icon. EaW U now shows it both on the bracket above the ship and on the command bar’s ability buttons, just as the original does.

Groundwork for engine trails. The game now works out, every frame, how many engine-trail particles each ship would give off, and those numbers match the original’s rules for every ship in the first release. Nothing is drawn yet. Drawing the trails, and checking them by eye against the original, comes next.

Next: station fighter wings that launch, take up their post outside the hangar, and chase intruders that come too close before returning, as they do in the original.
